1861 USA American Civil War: Alabama seceded from the United States.
1863 USA American Civil War: Battle of Arkansas Post: General John McClernand and Admiral David Dixon Porter captured the Arkansas River for the Union.
1863 USA American Civil War: Confederate States Ship (CSS) Alabama sank the United States Ship (USS) Hatteras off Galveston Lighthouse in Texas.
1879 South Africa Start of the Anglo-Zulu War, the Zulu war against British colonial rule in South Africa.
1904 Somaliland British troops massacred 1,000 dervishes in Somaliland, in the Horn of Africa.
1941 Germany; Africa Adolf Hitler ordered the creation of the Afrika Korps later used effort to invade North Africa.
1961 USA USA Civil Rights Movement: Race riot at the University of Georgia.
1967 USA Segregationist Lester Maddox (1915-2003) inaugurated as governor of Georgia.
1996 USA The Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Green County, Alabama, burned down. Arson was suspected.
1996 USA The Mt. Zoar Baptist Church in Green County, Alabama, burned down. Arson was suspected.
1997 Haiti Haitian President Rene Preval bypassed Parliament and appointed a new government by decree.
2011 USA Los Angeles, California judge stripped Dr. Conrad Murray of his medical license after ruling that prosecutors had sufficient evidence to try him for manslaughter in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson.
2013 Zimbabwe Zimbabwe‘s largest platinum mining company, Ziomplats, signed a deal to sell off its majority shareholding to the government as part of the country’s black empowerment laws.
2014 Tanzania Tanzania said its elephant population, beset by poaching for ivory, had plummeted by two-thirds in the past three-and-a-half decades.
