WATCH: The Gods of the Bible – Part 1 – Dr. Michael Heiser/Naked Bible

Shalom, everyone! In modern times, most Hebrews who know YAH repeatedly affirm that there is no other deity besides YAH (“YHVH”), meaning that no other deity exists. Contrary to popular belief, however, the Hebrew Bible does not support this view. Whenever the Holy Scriptures mention that there is “no god besides YHVH” they mean that no other deity is comparable to YHVH, not even close. These scriptures boast of YAH‘s incomparability to the deities. The ancient authors of the Hebrew Bible did not deny the existence of other deities, neither does YAH deny the existence of other deities. Prior to the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt, YAH stated that He would judge the Egyptian pantheon of gods (Exodus 12:12). Other deities indeed exist, however, YAH is superior to them all. The Hebrew Bible describes real spiritual entities who have power on earth and accept worship from humans. There is a hierarchy of spiritual beings with YAH at the very top.

The following is part one of a video presentation by renown biblical scholar and author Dr. Michael Heiser called “The Gods of the Bible.” Dr. Heiser presents references from the Hebrew Bible that prove that other deities exist. In pagan cultures, the spirits of these other deities inhabit graven images, after certain rituals are performed, thereby localizing that deity to a specific geographic area. Does this mean that the Hebrew Bible supports polytheistic worship? Absolutely not! The Hebrew Bible is monolatristic not monotheistic. Remember, We are to worship YAH only:

  1. YAH does not need an idol to inhabit and He cannot be captured or localized through ritual;
  2. YAH is all-powerful, all-knowing and self-existent;
  3. YAH is the only deity worthy of worship;
  4. YAH created all things in heaven and on earth, including those other deities.

Dr. Heiser is the author of the book, “The Unseen Realm.” Please note that Dr. Heiser is of the Christian faith. While TwelveTotems.org does not support the Christian doctrine of Jesus (Yeshua) being a deity worthy of worship, we do support the monolatry the Hebrew Bible supports: Other deities do exist, however, our attention, allegiance, praise, and worship must be to YAH and YAH alone.

Does the Bible affirm or deny the existence of other gods (elohim)?
